APS Celebrates Black History Month
Aurora Public Schools is celebrating Black History Month with a variety of activities at our schools.
The entire district and community is invited to the African-American Forum. This free event will be held on Friday, Feb. 22 at Aurora Central High School and includes workshops and entertainment. Dinner will be served starting at 5 p.m. and childcare will be provided. To learn more or to RSVP call 303-344-8060, ext. 28024.
As the nation celebrates Black History Month, APS is taking a hard look at how staff is meeting the needs of African-American students. APS is holding a special forum designed to strengthen collaboration with parents and increase learning for children.
The keynote speaker for this inaugural African-American Forum will be Dr. Kinette Richards. Dr. Richards has studied and addressed issues of equity for students of color, particularly African American students for the past ten years, in both school and mental health settings. During the past three years she has taken a lead role in the discussion and training of staff members at the school and district level, on the issue of race and the achievement gap as it pertains to students of color.
The forum will also include workshops targeting areas of interest for African American families.
Topics Include:
High School Level: How to Prepare for College
Middle School: Understanding Today’s Music
Elementary School Level: Family and Relationship Dynamics
The event is free and open to the public. Dinner will be served.
