May is the time to look back and plan forward. This has been a year of change and implementation of new structures and practices. I continue to be impressed with the momentum of change as we implement new practices and curriculum to support teachers and increase student achievement.
Thanks to Debbie Gerkin and Lisa Jones, principals at Crawford and Paris, for hosting a group of educators from Cherry Creek Public Schools. The teachers and principals who visited were interested in learning about our full day kindergarten program. They were very impressed with the instructional rigor and expectations we hold for our kindergarteners. In fact, they wee so impressed, further visits are being planned.
Recently, all buildings received feedback from parents about building climates, and secondary sites received additional feedback from students about building climates. When taken in aggregate (including staff climate data) the data provide us with rich information about how we can build on strengths and address concerns. Building Leadership Teams will be able to use the data to better inform the decisions made within school improvement plans. Please be certain that the survey data is posted on data walls, and Web sites.
My site visits have allowed me to learn much about the initial administration of the literacy assessment, the DRA II, in our elementary schools. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the training at sites. To relieve teachers of some assessment requirements during this initial administration, we have taken the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade literacy interim assessments “off the plate.”
I would also like to announce and welcome new principals: Alejandra Morales - Arkansas, Bonnie Hargrove - Dalton, Jenny Passchier - Park Lane, and Lynn Fair - Aurora Central.
We will take time this summer to assess our implementation of new practices and how they impact student achievement. We know that with this change we are building strong professional learning communities that have students at the center of our work as we use data to reflect on instructional practices.
