School hours
The bell hours have changed for next year. The first day of school will be Tuesday, August 5th.
• Breakfast will be served from 7:15 to 7:40 a.m.
• There will be supervision on the playground beginning at 7:30 a.m.
• The school bell will ring at 7:40 a.m. to line up.
• Students will be in the classrooms and ready to learn at 7:45 a.m.
• The dismissal school bell will ring at 2:15 p.m.
Please do what you can to bring your child to school well before 7:45 a.m. so that he doesn’t miss any instruction time. Students that continually arrive late usually fall academically behind. We recommend that you bring your child at 7:30 a.m. so that he or she can have ten minutes to play before the line up bell rings.
We also ask that you don’t check your child out of school before 2:15 p.m. Teachers will be in rigorous instruction until the last minute and we wouldn’t want your child to lose any instruction in the afternoon either. Please schedule dentist and doctor appointments after school hours. If you can’t possibly help it and you need to check your child out early, you will need to get prior approval from one of the Principals.
Before and after school care
Since our school hours have changed, we have contracted with the YMCA to provide child care before and after school. The YMCA is a community organization with a very good reputation in child care and summer camps. They currently provide before and after school care in 26 other schools in our area.
At Elkhart they will be providing sports, homework help, arts and crafts and other activities that might interest the children that they serve. They will also counsel children on how to make friends and on character values such as honesty, caring, responsibility and respect.
They will be available to provide child care from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day, including holidays and week-long breaks (fall break in October, winter break in December and spring break in March). The fees for this program depend on how many days and what options you choose for your child. They also have a sliding scale for discounted fees for low-income families. Please come to Elkhart on August 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. to register your child and to ask any questions that you may have.
School uniforms
This year we will continue to have a dress code for students. We will continue to have shirts (polo shirts or dress shirts) that are solid white or blue. In addition to the shirts, we will be adding a dress code for pants. Students may wear dress pants, shorts, skirts, skorts or jumpers that are navy blue or khaki. Sweaters and sweatshirts must be solid white or blue.
Students that are dressed in uniform tend to focus more on their school work and less on fashion. Thank you for your support with our dress code. As before, we have help available in the front office for families that cannot afford to purchase uniforms. We will be selling uniforms in the school beginning August 4th.
Address changes
If you have moved over the summer, please go to one of the Centralized Admissions offices to notify us of your new address. We recommend that you take care of this during the summer so that you don’t end up standing in long lines on the first day of school and so that your child can start school on the first day, with all of his or her peers. Please take proof of your new address and a photo ID to one of these locations:
• 690 Peoria Street, Suite F (corner of 6th Ave and Peoria)
• 1250 S. Buckley Road, Suite L (corner of Mississippi and Buckley)
• For more information please call 303-326-2200
School bus service
During the 2007-08 school year, Aurora Public Schools provided bus service to students that live in The Meadows (14470 East 13thAvenue) and any that live farther north than 12th avenue and Sable. Recently, there have been improvements (a stoplight) that have enhanced safety for elementary students who walk to and from school. As a result of this safety improvement, students residing in that area will no longer be eligible for bus service beginning in the 2008-2009 school year.
Volunteers needed for adult ESL classes
We will continue to have a family literacy program for adults at Elkhart. This program consists of English as a Second Language classes in the morning or afternoon during school hours. We are accepting applications to volunteer to teach English to adults. Two hours per week is the minimum commitment. Training will be provided. Please register at the main office with Mrs. Emma López, your family liaison.
