Murphy Creek Families Enjoy Night of Culture
Murphy Creek students and parents visited 10 different countries without ever leaving their school during their recent culture night. Families learned about the cultures, customs and rituals from countries around the world that reflected the diverse population at Murphy Creek.
Food played a major part in highlighting the diversity at Murphy Creek. Student and their families sampled delicacies such as Matoke (mashed plantains), Chinese egg rolls, bogogi (Korean beef), pad Thai, Thai iced tea and Chiura (Indian snack).
Students traveled “around the world” and got their passports stamped as they learned about life in different countries.
“The best part of my night was being able to learn about Thailand. I got to wear a special dress that night like girls in Thailand do for special occasions. It was so fun!”

Murphy Creek students also performed Irish dances, played in a recorder ensemble and sang African songs. Mexican folklore dancers and Irish step dancers from the community performed for families.
To prepare for this event, staff and students studied the lives of children in other countries. Students in Kim Young and Morgan Cooper’s classes studied Nigeria. After learning than Nigerian children’s lives are different than students’ lives in America, students donated clothes and toys to Nigerian children.
“What a fantastic turnout! Approximately 1,000 adults and students enjoyed dinner, cultural performances, and student projects from around the world. It was a wonderful family event, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of staff and students!”
