Hinkley Students Become Book Publishers
On March 23rd, tenth-grade students in Joyce Herald and Barb Larson’s English classes celebrated the publication of their books with their parents and the Hinkley community. Students modeled their books after “The House on Mango Street,” by Sandra Cisneros, which is a series of “vignettes,” or windows, into the life of her fictional character Esperanza Cordero.
Students created and bound their own books that contained vignettes of their own lives. Students also incorporated pictures, a front cover design, a table of contents, and a dedication page in their books. Each student earned a certificate of achievement for the successful completion of his or her book.
One student book publisher, Jasmine Harper, enjoyed the experience so much that she hopes to create more books in the future:
“When I wrote my own book entitled, ‘All About Me and My Life,’ it was fun and a good way to tell people what a great life I have, and also about the wonderful friends and family I am blessed with. If I was to write another book, I would be able to say that I remember when I wrote my first book. It wasn’t a lot, but I wrote my very own book and it was fun while writing it going back and writing about things that happened to me. It can be interesting to some people, and I’m glad that I could do that. Maybe I will write another book one day since Mrs. Herald has given me the confidence to be able to do that again.”

“I am so proud of these students,” Herald said. “Their books are beautiful, and a lasting memory of this time in their lives. Barb and I really enjoyed working on this project with the kids!”
