West Middle School Hosts "Game 24"

Who knew that math problems could be so much fun? APS middle school students!

In the new West Middle School media center, 28 students from across the district competed in the annual Game 24 Challenge.

In groups of four, students picked cards that included four numbers and calculated equations that equaled 24 using only addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. One group of students received the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 on their card. They then shouted out equations with those numbers that equaled 24: “4 x 3 = 12, 12 x 2 = 24, 24 ÷ 1 = 24!”

Columbia student Matt Myers and Mrachek students Thomas Clarke, Trevor Lager and Ernesto Felix found the most solutions in the shortest amount of time. The four students received certificates and medals as tournament winners.

“It’s wonderful to have students across the district come and celebrate math together. I feel that all the participants are champions, and it was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a district and celebrate achievement.”
