U.S. Navy sailors visited more than 300 students in APS to celebrate “Navy Week.” These men and women spoke about the importance of math and science in their careers to students at Dartmouth and Tollgate elementary schools and Murphy Creek K-8.

U.S. Navy men and women from the Navy Information Operation Command at Buckley Air Force Base shared how calculating speed, distance and time is vital to Navy ship traffic.

Navy Cryptologist, Petty Officer Matt Saxton, showed the science involved with fighting fires on Navy ships. Fire safety is so important that every Navy person is trained as a firefighter.

“I didn’t know the Navy people had to fight fires. I thought they just sailed on ships,” said fifth-grade student Selena. Navy visitors presented students with posters, water bottles and school supplies.

“Wow! They use math for their boats and science to make drinking water. It’s cool that they came to our school.”

“We are part of the Aurora community and were honored to be invited into the APS classrooms. These visits were a great opportunity to reinforce the math and science skills that students learn everyday.”
- CTTI Matt Saxton

At Columbia Middle School, U.S. Navy sailors from the USS Mesa Verde visited eighth-grade students and shared information about the ship’s Colorado connection. The ship is scheduled for commissioning in 2007, marking the 100th anniversary of the creation of Mesa Verde National Park, one of Colorado’s oldest parks.
