Rolling Out the Red Carpet for Tollgate Filmmakers
Walking in to the gym with the sounds of “Hurray for Hollywood” playing in the background, a group of talented young student filmmakers recently strut their stuff down the red carpet.
Tollgate Elementary School rolled out the royal rug to celebrate students learning how to turn their creative stories into short films.
In an eight-week claymation film project coordinated by Tollgate technology teacher Dorothy Duke and media specialist Kim McBride, students worked together to create, write and publish a fairy tale. Then they worked alongside their art teacher Kjaer Kirkegaard to create set designs and characters, and then it was off to the technical lab to put the finishing touches on their short films.
The school’s first annual claymation awards ceremony celebrated the hard work of these young artists.
“The kids’ leadership qualities really shined during this project. Some of the kids who are normally quiet connected with this project creatively and they wanted everyone to know.”

Oscars were given to students for Best Achievement, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Soundtrack and Best Set Design.
The premier showing unveiled the fifth-grade films to the entire school and parents.
