Students Roll Into Camp
With a bat in his hand and a huge grin on his face, South Middle School student Johnny Garcia knocked a softball past the pitcher and into the outfield. “This is really fun!” said Johnny.
Along with Johnny, more than 100 children from all over the state spent a week at Gateway High School this summer for the 24th Annual Colorado Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp. This special camp provides wheelchair-bound children the opportunity to experience a traditional camp experience not often available to them.
The camp introduces children ages 6-18 to both recreational and competitive wheelchair sports. Adult wheelchair athletes and community volunteers provide instruction in various activities including tennis, archery, basketball, swimming, softball and rugby. The campers also learn recreational games such as hand cycling, cup stacking and bowling.
“The camp was a great learning experience for everyone involved. Wheelchair-bound kids learned to play sports in a supportive and fun environment, and community volunteers– many of them high school and college students– learned what it’s like to live a regular life in a wheelchair.”
