Summer Bond Projects Advance

Students and staff at eight district schools will benefit from bond-funded construction improvements that took place over the summer. In addition, APS began construction on three new school buildings slated to open in fall 2008:

  • A three-story building on the current site of Boston Elementary
  • A K-8 magnet school located near Pickens Technical College
  • An Intercept/Transition Services building for special needs students, also located near Pickens Technical College

The new buildings will be funded from contingency funds and savings added to the bond program due to careful financial management.

The new Boston Elementary will accommodate 425 students and provide a kindergarten-fifth grade program. Boston students and staff will occupy the vacant Jamaica Elementary School during the 2007-08 school year.

Full building remodels at West Middle School and Hinkley High School are in the final phase of construction. The building remodels have given the schools a fresh new look and added media centers, cafeterias and new entrance additions.

Additional projects ranging from new heating and air conditioning systems to playground improvements are underway at Dalton, Jewell and Kenton elementary schools, Columbia and East Middle Schools, and Aurora Central High School.
