APS Students Experience Art in Aurora
More than 15 APS students spent the summer creating artistic masterpieces as part of the Picture It! Art Exposure Program. This five-week program, held at The Other Side Arts gallery in Aurora, exposed students to different art forms such as music, dance, performing arts and visual arts.
For a lesson about Greek theater, students created masks using Vaseline and strips of plaster. “I liked making the masks for art class. It was gooey and squishy all over my face,” said Jewell Elementary student Kurstein K.
In addition to the hands-on component of the program, students listened to musicians, watched dance performers, took a trip to the Denver Art Museum and hosted an art show for their families.
“Our goal is to enhance social ties and help build relationships in our community by recruiting participants from various sites in APS. We want our program to enrich each student’s school career and personal life.”
