APS Students Earn Prizes for Good Behavior

Written by the APS Communication Department @ 9:06 am Print This Story Print This Story

After just two weeks of school, some APS students are on their way toward big prizes for positive behavior. Teachers, bus drivers and parents recognize students as part of the Positive Behavior Support initiative. PBS is a national program that addresses the behavioral and discipline systems needed for successful learning.

At Murphy Creek K-8, it is all about the “JETS.” Students earn “JETS” tickets based on positive behavior. The four areas of achievement at Murphy Creek K-8 are:

• Join In • Excel • Thoughtful Actions • Self Respect

Murphy Creek students are encouraged to be team members and challenge themselves to do more. They think before they act and make positive choices.

Aurora Frontier K-8 recently held a “SOAR” assembly, to recognize 20 students for their positive actions during the first week of school. Their tickets represent the four areas of the “SOAR” model:

• Supportive • Overcome • Accountable • Respectful

In just the first week, 500 tickets were collected at Aurora Frontier. The student with the most tickets at the end of the year earns a Nintendo Wii.

There are currently 405 schools using the PBS system in the state. With PBS, teachers have more time to go over lessons with students and administrators spend less time dealing with behavioral issues.

PBS teams are in place at eight APS schools including Aurora Frontier and Murphy Creek K-8’s, Jewell, Lansing and Vaughn elementary schools, Mrachek and South middle schools, and Gateway High School.

“PBS increases a student’s sense of belonging to the school community. By recognizing and encouraging appropriate behavior, academic engagement and learning increase.”
- John L. Barry
APS Superintendent
