They buckle up their helmets and strap on their backpacks to head out for another day in the classroom. Parents of APS students who walk and bike to school are breathing a sigh of relief, knowing their children are protected along the way. APS has partnered with the city of Aurora and Bicycle Colorado to keep kids safe on their way to and from school.

Thanks to a $26,800 grant, the Colorado Safe Routes to School program will fund safety education programs in APS. Bicycle Colorado will train all elementary and middle APS physical education teachers on how to keep kids safe to and from school. Students will learn the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and the rules of the road from their teachers. What may seem simple can save a student’s life.

“To have that kind of impact is an amazing thing. It is a worthwhile program.”
- Jay Pierce
Principal Planner for the city of Aurora Planning Department

Teacher training will take place this fall, and then the message will be passed on to students. After going through the program, students will become much more aware of their surroundings and are more cautious as they make their way to and from school.

“This grant is an example of how the city of Aurora and the school district are working together to make walking and biking to school safe in Aurora.” – Josh Hensley
APS Planning Coordinator

The program includes the option for students and their families to purchase low-cost bicycle helmets. Bicycle Colorado will offer helmets for less than $10.

Last year, staff at Aurora Frontier K-8 used funds from a similar grant to implement a safety program at their school.
