Gateway Students Hoist Flags in Honor of New Law
![]()
Law and government students at Gateway High School are learning civic lessons firsthand. Recently, Colorado Senator Suzanne Williams and Representative Nancy Todd joined Gateway students to hang flags from foreign countries in the social studies wing at the school.
In spring 2007, Gateway students testified before the Colorado Senate Education Committee regarding the display of flags in public buildings. Using a speech prepared for their law and government class, students presented their views on the issue to the committee. At that time, it was illegal to permanently display any flags besides the United States and Colorado flags in public buildings, such as schools.
Governor Bill Ritter signed House Bill 1050 into law, allowing the permanent display of flags in public buildings.
“This is a great opportunity for students to connect the learning in the classroom to a real life experience. Our students will stand together with elected officials to watch the legislative process from beginning to end.”

“It was an honor having Senator Williams and Representative Todd here at our school. I felt special today because they remembered me from last spring, when I testified.”
