A Lesson in Caring
When guest speaker John Beckman stepped into Dot Olson’s Advanced Social Studies class, students knew this man understood the importance of caring for others.
As a little person, Beckman visited when Olson’s students were discussing the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile characteristics. One of those characteristics is Caring. Beckman inspired thoughtful questions from Olson’s students.
Beckman shared stories of growing up amid cruel remarks and receiving stares from countless people, while having to cope with the world around him. He answered questions from students and inspired them to set goals, work hard and to make good life decisions. “I learned that all of us can do many great and important things in our lives,” said Aurora Hills student Kayla.
“After meeting Beckman, I think students are more aware of the importance of caring and respecting the people around them. Caring does not have a specific shape or form; It just is.”
