Hinkley Students Return to Elementary School

Hinkley High School teachers Tara Harris and Anna Bicknase don’t just encourage students to volunteer in the community, they provide opportunities for them!

Harris’ 23 students walk from their classroom at Hinkley to Laredo Elementary School to mentor third and fourth-grade students. Hinkley students collected school supplies and presented them to Laredo students to use in their classroom.

Each week these high school students become “Literacy Buddies.” They listen to students read, offer writing support and host a pen-pal program.

“My ‘Literacy Buddy’ read my personal narrative and helped me revise it. I like her.”

Bicknase has coordinated ten partnership classes with her students. They now visit students at Elkhart and Laredo elementary schools and East Middle School. Hinkley students promote literacy by reading to students, playing literacy games and sharing experiences with the younger students.

“For me, the best part of volunteering is how the kids ask us what high school is really like.”
