Parent Volunteers Step Up at Dalton

Written by the APS Communication Department @ 3:17 pm Print This Story Print This Story

Usually the school nurse leaves a vision screening exhausted, but on this one occasion Gail Therrien, the school nurse at Dalton Elementary, was exhilarated.

Twelve amazing parent volunteers and two Pickens Technical College nursing students provided vision screening for over 535 students at Dalton Elementary.

Not only did these volunteers provide expert screening, they went above and beyond by missing lunch to prepare the cafeteria for afternoon screenings. Parents swept floors, washed tables and moved furniture to ready the cafeteria.

Parents worked together using techniques they learned that day to obtain accurate vision results on hard-to-screen children. They screened all Dalton classrooms on time with minimal time taken away from class instruction.

“The Dalton volunteers truly went above and beyond in support of the health of our Dalton community.”
- Gail Therrien
Dalton Elementary Nurse
