APS Rallies for Student Programs
The city of Aurora, in partnership with Aurora Public Schools and other community organizations, will join more than 7,500 locations across the country in hosting a Lights On Afterschool rally on Oct. 18.
The rally, in support of after-school programs, is part of the eighth annual Lights on Afterschool nationwide celebration. The event is sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness and advocacy organization.
Colorado State Board of Education member Karen Middleton and Aurora City Council member Molly Markert will join APS Superintendent John Barry and West Middle School students and parents to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs for youth. The event will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at West Middle School, 10100 E. 13th Avenue.
In addition to the guest speakers, the rally will feature presentations and exhibits by youth currently participating in Aurora afterschool programs and an award ceremony for “Afterschool Heroes.” The event is free, and the public is invited to attend.
About 67 percent of Colorado’s youth in grades kindergarten through 12 participate in afterschool programs.
