Sorority Kickstarts School Year at APS

Written by the APS Communication Department @ 11:54 am Print This Story Print This Story

Free notebooks, Kleenex and glue are showing up in APS classrooms thanks to the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority. The national service organization is boosting learning at Sixth Avenue Elementary School with boxes of donated school supplies.

“Those of us with established careers see this as a way of giving back to the community.”
- Ollie Smith
Sigma Gamma Rho sorority member

The sorority calls the project “Operation Big Book Bag.” Last year, they donated supplies to Sable Elementary. This year, they turned their attention to Sixth Avenue Elementary. They say they donate where help is needed most. Principal Dana McDonald says 73 percent of students at Sixth Avenue Elementary receive free or reduced lunches.

The Sigma Gamma Rho sorority adopts a different school each year. Members plan to do more for Sixth Avenue Elementary throughout the year, although they are keeping their plans a secret for now.

“I’ve never seen this many school supplies.”

Sixth Avenue Elementary fifth grader
