Pilot Schools - Now Accepting Applications
The Aurora Public Schools Board of Education and the Aurora Education Association approved a plan to create a Pilot School program in the district. Based on a model developed in Boston Public Schools, Pilot Schools will be an effective vehicle for school reform in APS.
APS is now accepting Request for Proposals for schools to become Pilot Schools. Applications will be accepted through Dec. 3, 2007.
The discussion about Pilot Schools started nearly two years ago. This week, the APS Board of Education considered how teachers view the Pilot School proposal. After 80 percent of voting teachers in AEA approved the plan, the APS Board of Education unanimously voted to approve the plan as well.
“We are very pleased to be making groundbreaking history in APS,” said Brenna Isaacs, AEA President.
The goal of Pilot Schools is simple: provide schools with autonomy and maximum control over their resources in exchange for increased accountability.
The schools remain part of the district but are given more freedom, with the expectation that students will attain higher levels of academic achievement and exceed district averages.
Existing schools may apply to transition into a Pilot School. APS could also create new schools under the Pilot School plan.
“If all goes well, we will have our first Pilot School up and running as early as next year,” said APS Superintendent John L. Barry.
“Now the stage is set for teachers and staff members to work with parents, community and business leaders to make their vision for student achievement a reality. Pilot Schools will offer an exciting opportunity for innovation and creativity with the ultimate goal being student achievement. We expect lots of interest in this initiative.”
