APS Incident Response Team Performs Functional Drill
With recent incidents locally and around the country, student safety has become even more of a concern in our schools. On Oct. 23, Aurora Public Schools, in conjunction with local police, fire and other groups, actively tested its emergency response in a functional drill.
A community member known as the “bandit” initiated the critical incident. Several community members acted as students during the drill. The “bandit” took control of a school bus with several students on board.
The Aurora Police Department, the Aurora Fire Department and the Aurora Office of Emergency Management took part in the drill. It ended at the APD shooting range, where SWAT officers rescued all students and arrested the suspects involved.
APS generally plans one functional drill per school year. This drill coincided with “National Safe Schools Week.” The week is dedicated to helping students, teachers, parents and administrators raise awareness of the urgent need to keep schools free from violence.
