APS PACEsetter: Lane Lyon Lives for the News

Look no further than the 10 p.m. news to see what Rangeview High School grad Lane Lyon is doing. A reporter and fill-in anchor at KMGH-TV Denver’s 7 News, Lane says he’s doing exactly what he set out to do many years ago.
“This journey began while I was a student in APS,” Lyon said. When Lane was a seventh grader at Columbia Middle School, his father nominated him for a Youth On the Move award. “I was interviewed by Channel 4, and I was hooked,” Lyon said. “I knew from that day I wanted to be a television reporter.”
Lane says several teachers encouraged him to start working on his dream and career goal. He remembers teacher Glen Blanco showing him how to operate the school’s video camera in the media center.
“I would help videotape class projects and students who stopped by the studio. Mr. Blanco recognized my passion for television very early. I’m reminded of that each time I hear his voice during APS football games.”

When remembering his Rangeview days, Lane speaks fondly of faculty member Vicki Horken. Lane was active in the TV and radio clubs Horken ran.
“Ms. Horken’s guidance was instrumental. She encouraged me to work hard through college and to stay ahead of the trends in technology. We weren’t just talking about a career, but charting a course to landing a job in local news. I know she inspired hundreds of students in the same way. I feel very fortunate.”

Lyon graduated from Rangeview in 1989 and Colorado State University in 1994. Lyon then began a 10-year path to returning home, through television stations in Texas, Minnesota, Idaho, and Utah. “It’s very common to work your way up through smaller market stations,” Lyon said.
In 2004, Lyon finally landed a job as a general assignment reporter. He enjoys being somewhere different every day. Sometimes he’s in multiple places in one day. “I could be at a wildfire for one newscast, then reporting on breaking news in downtown Denver a few hours later. It’s an exciting job,” Lyon said.
Since returning to Denver, Lyon has been back to visit Rangeview. He was invited to serve as emcee of the school’s Homecoming Pep Rally.
“I wanted students to know that I was quiet and not popular as a student. But I never stopped believing in myself.”

Lyon is giving back to students. Currently, he’s teaching a news writing class at the University of Colorado.
Lyon can be seen reporting from locations all over Colorado most weeknights at 10 p.m. on 7 News. He and his family live in Aurora.
