Leaders are Readers

Books were the focus on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 24-25 in Aurora Public Schools. A program called “Leaders are Readers” matched students with elected officials, city leaders and community members.

Superintendent John L. Barry and Aurora City Council Member Deborah Wallace kicked off the event at Sable Elementary School. The pair read with students and answered their questions.

At Tollgate Elementary School, APS Chief Operating Officer Anthony Sturges read to first graders and Dr. Linda Bowman from the Community College of Aurora read “This is the Dream” to second graders.

Readers visited other schools, such as Elkhart, Aurora Quest, Crawford, Sixth Avenue, Lansing and Yale elementary schools and Murphy Creek K-8 school.

Superintendent Barry issued a challenge on the first day of school to elected officials. He encourages them to be “leaders who are readers” by visiting one school and reading to students.

APS is celebrating October as “Read Aloud Month.” Parents can do their part and build a lifetime reading habit with their children, by reading out loud with them every day.
