Board President Writes Letter to Community

Dear APS Staff, Students, Parents and Community Members:

It is my great privilege and honor to welcome three new members to the Aurora Public Schools Board of Education. With the addition of Peter Cukale, Mary Lewis, and Amy Prince, the entire Board consists of members who have been elected within the last two years. As current members of the Board can attest, the learning curve is steep. I liken it to trying to drink out of a fire hose, possible, but not easy. There is so much to learn in regard to budget, policy, and curriculum. It can seem overwhelming. I know that each of the new Board members will bring a new and dynamic energy with specific skills and knowledge that will make the entire group better.

The future is now for Aurora Public Schools. Under the district’s strategic plan, VISTA 2010, we have made huge strides towards our mission:

“Teach every student the knowledge, skills and values necessary to enter college or a career and become a contributing member of society who flourishes in a diverse, dynamic world.”

The goals we have set for students are high, and I believe that our students will rise to meet the challenge. I also know that we will need the continued support and guidance of our community. Everyone has something to offer and everyone has a voice that deserves to be heard.

On behalf of the entire Board of Education, I would like to extend an invitation to attend a Board meeting. Visit www.aps.k12.co.us/boe/calendar.html for the complete meeting schedule. Finally, please take a minute to introduce yourself to our new Board members as they make their way around our community over the next few weeks and months. I know they would appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Matt Cook
