Murphy Creek Students Honor Veterans

More than 500 students gathered to honor military men and women for Veterans Day at Murphy Creek K-8. Wearing red, white and blue, students entered cheering on representatives from every branch of the military.

The Navy Operational Support Center Denver Color Guard presented the American Flag while the National Anthem played softly in the background. Superintendent Barry spoke to students about everyday heroes. “If you know someone in the military, recognize them and thank them for their service to our country,” said Barry.

The choir performed songs about American heroes and thanking those who sacrifice for freedom. With a slideshow of photos depicting men and women serving around the world, choir student Rebecca R. performed a touching solo of “Traveling Soldier,” a song describing the sacrifice of military life.

Murphy Creek staff honored Juan “Gonzo” Gonzalez, former special education parpaprofessional and US Air Force veteran who passed away in the summer unexpectedly. The staff presented a shadowbox to his family with his Murphy Creek jersey, photos and a poem from his daughter.

Buckley Air Force Base is home to more than 300 families that attend Murphy Creek K-8 and Gateway High School. In continued efforts to partner with Buckley Air Force Base the “Buckley Buddies” program is in full swing. The program is a weekly tutoring session where military members support students with homework assignments, organization and assistance with projects.

“This celebration is a wonderful way to honor our families, share student talents and demonstrate what a great school community we have.”
- Suzanne Morey
Murphy Creek K-8 Principal
