Winter Safety Letter to Staff
Date: November 19, 2007
To: Instructional Staff Members
From: John L. Barry, Superintendent
Subject: Safety Makes Good Instructional Sense
RE: Did you know ….
Every year we review the number of on the job injuries and the fiscal impact of those injuries. What we also need to focus on is the educational impact of on the job injuries. Every educator at APS will agree that our students need their teachers with them every instructional day to make our committed gains in student achievement.
Did you know that last year:
There were 62 teachers injured on the job?
There were 11 special needs teachers injured on the job?
Teacher injuries resulted in 150 lost instructional days?
Special needs teacher injuries resulted in 29 lost instructional days?
We all must practice safe behavior both on and off the job. Without you in the classroom, we all know that instructional impact is decreased for our students. During the winter months, please remember to exit your vehicle carefully when there is ice and snow on the ground. Wearing appropriate footwear will decrease the chance of a slip and fall in the parking lot as you enter the building (I was rightly criticized last year by the BOE for wearing improper shoes during our tough winter—will do better this year)! While inside your building, please be aware of your surroundings. Many accidents occur when staff members are distracted and not watching where they are walking.
We want you to have a safe and injury free year. Injuries will impact your professional and personal life in many ways. Please be safe for the sake of yourself, your family, and your APS family to include your students and co-workers. SAFETY MAKES GOOD INSTRUCTIONAL SENSE!
