APS Student Writes His Way to the Top
Cameron Kimpson, a sixth grade student in Advanced Language Arts at Columbia Middle School, recently won second place for his writing entry in the Rocky Mountain PBS Storymakers Contest. His writing submission was chosen from other sixth-grade entries in a statewide competition designed for middle school creative writers.
Kimpson’s story, “The Dog Who Had to Hide,” chronicles the adventures of a canine named Smokey. The six-year-old Labrador Retriever, who is also known as the “Dog Knight,” helps fight crime.
“Just the thought of my lazy, twelve-year-old dog venturing off the couch to solve crime made me laugh and inspired me to write this story,” Kimpson said.
Kimpson will attend an awards assembly on December 8 where he will receive a digital camera and a $75 gift card to Borders. He will also have the opportunity to attend a two-day workshop that will focus on digital storytelling.
“It feels great to win this award. I was totally shocked when I heard I got second place. I felt a wave of accomplishment!”
