APS tackles truancy with door-knocking campaign

Truant students can often become drop-out students. In Colorado, 80 percent of all dropouts were habitual truants. Truant students are six times more likely to use drugs and 12 times more likely to commit serious assaults. Aurora Public Schools is partnering with several community groups to keep kids in school.

On Tuesday, Jan. 22, APS Superintendent John L. Barry will join staff and community members for a door knocking campaign. They will knock on doors of every APS student who has been chronically truant this year. The goal is to invite students back to school.

Prior to the door knocking, Superintendent Barry will hold a news conference to discuss the many strategies that APS is using to keep kids in school. Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates will provide an update on the reduction in crime around district high schools since APS started its truancy outreach program in 2007. Barry and Oates will also discuss a new bill related to school attendance laws.

Local media is invited to join Superintendent Barry as he visits homes. Students who have benefited from truancy outreach efforts will also be available for interviews.
