APS Students Throw Party to Honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

This was no ordinary party! Elkhart Elementary School second-grade students and parents celebrated Martin Luther King’s birthday in their classroom as a tribute to the great leader.
The classroom transformed into an outlet for student expression about Dr. King. Teacher Towana Littleton read books about the civil rights leader, and students shared their award-winning essays. “I let students know that with an education you can write your own ticket. Dr. King valued education and fought for everyone’s civil rights,” said Littleton.
Students talked with their parents and their classmates about ways Dr. King changed the world. Eating cookies and ice cream, students shared that Littleton’s classroom is peaceful, their school is peaceful and they need to help make the world peaceful.
“Dr. King is a brave man. He found lots of ways to solve problems and he didn’t believe in violence.”

Several of Littleton’s students will be honored on Jan. 23 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest Award Ceremony at the Aurora Central Library.
