Aurora business members filled the student commons at Pickens Technical College for a recent Leadership Aurora meeting, where they visited a variety of career-preparatory programs and learned more about the educational opportunities at the school.

Leadership Aurora member Chris Bray of Delphic Investigative Services visited the Multimedia Graphic Design program, where students created a concept for a company logo within a short time frame. “It’s interesting to watch the students’ creative juices start flowing,” said Bray. He was also impressed by the wide “diversity of ages of students.”

“Education is a powerful tool that affects so many aspects of our society. A better educated population contributes to the tax base. There’s less of a burden on welfare. The health system wins because more people come under an employer’s health insurance. Children of educated and employed citizens grow up in a completely different environment. It is a large piece of the puzzle that not only impacts individuals and their success, but also deeply impacts society on many levels.”

Leadership Aurora 015Josh Hensley of APS Support Services visited the Pickens Tech Salon, where esthetician students gave Hensley and his colleagues a paraffin hand wax treatment.

Other Aurora business members visited the Pickens Tech Collision Repair program. Energetic and friendly students gave them a tour of the program’s facilities and state-of-the-art equipment. Most Pickens Tech Collision Repair students find jobs in their field right after they graduate.

The group of business members that visited the Animal Sciences program brought back a hedgehog to show everyone. They praised the program as a great opportunity for students interested in a career with animals.

Overall, the event gave members of Leadership Aurora a glimpse of the impressive array of programs and college credit opportunities that Pickens Technical College provides for students from eight school districts of all ages.

“I was very impressed with the breadth of training at Pickens Technical College. The passion and dedication of all the educators was refreshing. I was impressed to see an alternative option to higher education that taps into a practical resource not available at state colleges.”
