american flagThe Toll Gate Creek Daughters of the American Revolution will honor Gateway and Hinkley High School students as good citizens at its awards ceremony on Feb. 14.

School staff members nominated the students for their community service and leadership. The students were also selected based on outstanding essay entries.

PA194484DAR will also honor Century Elementary School volunteer Rose Mainero for her many years of support for students. When Century Elementary opened its doors in 1985, Rose Mainero, affectionately known as “Grandma Rose,” was one of the first school volunteers to sign up. More than 20 years later, 91 year-old Mainero still volunteers at Century nearly every day.

DAR will also recognize Hinkley High School teacher Christine Sundberg as an outstanding teacher of American History. Sundberg has already earned national and international teaching awards.

The DAR, founded in 1890, is a volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.
