Promising Students Publish Personal Stories

Student winners clockwise from top left: Rachael Brown, Griffin Ernest, Jesus Martinez, Hope Barajas, Sandra Barmann, Talon Manship and Crystal Garcia
Twelve Vassar Elementary School students can now walk into the Tattered Cover bookstore and pull their published stories right off the shelf. The students’ stories were published as a part of the Colorado Children’s Family Story Project.
Teacher Karin Rosedale learned of the project last spring and supported her fifth-grade students in their quest to become published authors. Rosedale assigned the story as homework, breaking up the writing project into manageable pieces. “This project allowed me to offer my students a writing experience with an authentic audience,” said Rosedale. The students’ hard work paid off. Their stories were published in the Relatively Speaking book. Student Griffin Ernest has a story about his grandfather in the book. “I showed some of my teachers at school this year the Relatively Speaking book with my story and they very surprised that it was in an actual book,” said Ernest. “I thank Mrs. Rosedale a lot because she pushed me very hard, helped me grow and entered my story in this contest!”
