Yale Students Learn the Beauty of Diversity … Through Food!
America is not a melting pot, it’s a salad! From Latinos to Ethiopians, from Christians to Buddhists, from infants to the elderly, we are all different. But when mixed together, we enhance and compliment each other…just like ingredients in a salad!
This concept is what Carneice Brown-White, aka Mrs. Goober, taught Yale Elementary School students through the sharing of her book “My Salad.” This analogy enlightened students about the beauty of diversity and why they should respect people of all cultures.
“Salad ingredients blend well together. We’re attractive and beautiful in any kind of weather,” Mrs. Goober recited with students from a page in her book.
Mrs. Goober also helped students understand how to express their mood through the “ABCs of Positive Feelings.” From feeling “openly optimistic” to “victoriously vibrant,” students learned 26 new ways to articulate their happiness.
Mrs. Goober’s passion drives her to give freely of her time to inspire children to feel better, do better and be better. She spent 40 years as a teacher and plans to dedicate the rest of her life to sharing the beauty of diversity in fun, innovative and creative ways.
