APS Celebrates Black History Month with Forum
Nearly 400 people from the Aurora community attended the African-American Forum on Feb. 22 at Aurora Central High School. As the nation celebrates Black History Month, this event took a hard look at how staff is meeting the needs of African-American students through a series of workshops. The event also included dinner and entertainment.
Keynote speaker Dr. Kinette Richards discussed the importance of training staff members in APS on the issue of race and the achievement gap as it pertains to students of color. Dr. Richards has studied and addressed issues of equity for students of color, particularly African-American students in school settings, for the past ten years.
The breakout workshops included such topics as:
- Small group conversations with APS Superintendent John L. Barry and APS Board of Education members
- How to Prepare for College
- Community Service Internships
- Parenting Children in Single-Family Homes
- Understanding Today’s Music
- Cultural Discipline
- Family Dynamics and Relationships
- Early Childhood Education and the Impact of Retention
- How to access your child’s grades and atttendance at home using the APS Parent Portal
The forum also included music from the Gateway Gospel Choir, performances by the Boys and Girls Club Step Dancers and the Aurora Central African Dance Team, and a presentation by empowerment coach Mrs. CJay Smith.
