A Hero in the Hallway
Officer James Seneca starts his day greeting parents and students as the Murphy Creek K-8 school resource officer. This 20-year law enforcement veteran has served with the Aurora Police Department for the past 13 years.
His time at the school is spent building positive relationships by talking with students, visiting classrooms and playing basketball on the playground.
“I think police officers should be approachable. We want to see students succeed. We know that by working together with students, parents and staff, we can support them.”
- James Seneca
Murphy Creek K-8 School Resource Officer
Officer Seneca protects and serves Aurora Public Schools students like the other 17 officers in APS secondary schools. It is what Officer Seneca does in his “time off” that might surprise his community. He founded the Cops Fighting Cancer Foundation four years ago. His non-profit organization has raised more than $400,000 and has helped more than 80 families experiencing the impact of cancer in their lives. In March 2007, Officer Seneca was featured in the Heroes Among Us section of People Magazine. View the People Magazine article.
His personal connection to cancer began shortly after he became a police officer. In 1987, he was diagnosed with leukemia. “The experience was horrific. I know I wouldn’t be here without the support of friends and family. I just want the families impacted by cancer to know that people want to help.”
