Rangeview High School teacher Lexie Weintraub can now offer her students a real-world lesson in how democracy works in the Czech Republic. Weintraub was recently selected as one of eight U.S. teachers to participate in the Civitas Professional Exchange Program, a one-week program that partners teachers from the U.S., Czech Republic and Slovakia to share teaching strategies to prepare students for democratic citizenship.

As part of the professional exchange, Weintraub participated in activities focusing on the development of democracy, observed classrooms in the city of Usti in the Czech Republic, and visited the Senate and American Embassy in Prague.

“Democracy is a process not a defined, static state of governing. As a world community, we can learn from each other’s processes as to how to govern fairly and justly. From my experience, I hope to share with my students the importance of traveling and listening to other’s history and viewpoints. We are all so much more alike than different.”
