Astronaut Lands at North to Give $5,000 to Science Program
Former NASA astronaut Richard Searfross landed at North Middle School on March 4 to kick off the Science Matters! initiative, sponsored by Comcast and the Discovery Science Channel. Searfoss awarded North with a $5,000 check for its science program. North is one of only 15 schools in the country to receive this award. They are now eligible to compete with the other 14 schools for an additional $25,000.
The awards ceremony included an interactive assembly aimed at fostering students’ interest in science and encouraging a lifelong love of learning. “Jake the Science Guy” also took part in the assembly, featuring hands-on science mind-benders and demonstrations.
Following the assembly, North Middle School science teachers received challenge kits with lesson plans and materials for use in their classrooms.
As part of the Science Matters! challenge, North students will put together a Public Service Announcement on why science matters and its relevance to daily life, which will be used in competition with students from 14 other cities. The winning class will earn $25,000 for the school’s science program, and each student will receive a video iPod. The PSA will air nationally on the Science Channel in July.
Other cities participating in Science Matters! include:

- Boston
- Chicago
