APS Receives $378,000 for English Language Learners
Smiles filled the media center at Fulton Elementary on March 5, as APS students and parents accepted a check for $378,000 from the Rose Community Foundation. The money will be used to improve learning for second language students in APS.
The $378,000 grant provides a foundation to ensure success for APS students.
“We believe in the genius of people. And that’s really what we’re investing in,” said Sheila Bugdanowitz, Rose Community Foundation President & CEO.
The money will be used to:
” Close the learning gap and increase achievement for second language students
” Provide professional development opportunities for staff
” Increase parent involvement for English language learners
The money will be distributed to a number of schools. District officials will determine which schools will benefit directly from the Rose Community Foundation grant later this month.
APS students come from more than 100 countries and speak 90 languages. More than a third of the district students speak English as a second language. Fulton teacher Erin Whitford said teaching English as a second language can be quite a challenge. “We don’t just say something, we have to show it with our body language and with simple things like repetition,” said Whitford.
APS is working to become the model district for success with second language students. Rose Community Foundation members presented the check to Superintendent John L. Barry and students at the conclusion of the event.
