APS Parents Honored for Giving their Students a ‘Bright Start’
APS students recently watched their parents earn recognition for time spent in the classroom. The dedicated parents recently completed a six-week program through the Bright Start Family Literacy program.
Parents learned how to help their children succeed in school through interactive workshops on communication and literacy. Every parent received more than $225 worth of books and materials to use at home with their children.
Bright Start’s President and Founder Gary Sonora Surdam recognized nearly 200 parents for completing the six-week program. The parents come from 11 schools in the district. APS has the largest Bright Start program in the state.
Surdam began the Bright Start program while he was an elementary teacher. “When we empower our parents, we are, in turn, empowering our children in school and, most of all, in life,” said Surdam.
One parent from each school also won a laptop computer in a drawing during the program. Arkansas, Century, Clyde Miller, Dartmouth, Elkhart, Iowa, Jewell, Lyn Knoll, Park Lane, Sixth Avenue and Virginia Court elementary schools participated in the program.
Another six-week follow-up session begins in April. Schools use state and federal funding to pay for the program.
