DSC 0061As part of VISTA 2010, APS will be adopting Standards-Based Grading district-wide in the fall of 2009 in order to more accurately measure how students are developing proficiency. Standards-Based Grading will measure students against the Colorado state standards. “The primary goal of SBG is to better communicate what each student knows and is able to do according to state content standards. SBG also separates the grade for work habits, such as, attendance, homework and behavior from the achievement grade.” said APS Achievement Director Rich Patterson.

Standards-Based Grading will enable teachers to accurately monitor and report how students are learning specific content areas, such as math, reading, writing and science. SBG is already in place at all of the elementary and K-8 schools. Standards-based grading measures students’ knowledge of grade-level content over time by reporting the most recent, consistent level of performance.

DSC 0027With SBG, teachers communicate clear course standards so students know exactly what they need to learn in a particular course. In essence, SBG provides a roadmap so students know what they need to learn to achieve their goal. Teachers provide examples of proficient work to students so that they have models that help them understand the expected level of performance. In addition, teachers give students feedback during the entire term so students can revise their work, get extra help if they need it, and demonstrate their understanding of the content.

With SBG, teachers, students and parents will be better informed about what the student knows and is able to do according to state standards. To learn more about SBG, visit http://www.aps.k12.co.us/family/grading.
