boydrawingMany education experts agree. Children who attend high-quality preschools enter kindergarten with better pre-reading skills, larger vocabularies and stronger basic math skills than those who do not.

Through the Colorado Preschool Program, Aurora Public Schools is expanding preschool capacity to accommodate more students. APS currently serves 1,100 students at 16 school and eight community sites. In fall 2008, the number of students will increase to more than 1,500.

In addition to opening new spaces at existing sites, APS is converting the building that was previously Jamaica Elementary School to a new preschool which will accommodate 250 students. The building improvements include remodeled bathrooms and classrooms, new playground equipment suitable for preschool age children, and additional staff and visitor parking. Jamaica joins the APS Child Development Center, located at 1420 Laredo St., as the second site designated specifically for preschool.

“Our need for preschool is great. We are excited to be able to expand our preschool opportunities to serve more children in Aurora.”
- Sheri Charles
Early Childhood Director
