Former APS student Melissa Buchholz knows that what happens in high school matters! Her first steps toward her lifetime career began in the hallways of Hinkley High School and has led to her current position at the Denver Children’s Hospital. As part of the APS Executive Internship Program while at Hinkley, Buchholz worked at the Comitis Crisis Center.

“The internship opportunity confirmed that I had an interest in the psychology field. It provided me with the experience to learn about the family emergency housing center, work in the walk-in shelter and learn about the importance of 24-hour crisis hotlines,” said Buchholz.

In addition to an introduction to psychology, she showcased her performing talents to her school community. She earned the lead role in the “Fiddler on the Roof” school production and was active in choir and drama.

Buchholz graduated from Hinkley High School in 1998 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Regis University in 2002. Her degree included a double major in neuroscience and psychology. Buchholz also earned a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology in 2004 and earned a Doctor of Psychology degree from Xavier University in 2007. She is currently completing her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Colorado Denver Health Science Center, Anschutz Campus. The fellowship focuses on child development and infant mental health.

“Attending Hinkley shaped who I am today. I forged strong bonds with classmates and teachers. It was a good place to be!”
