Butterflies and Tarantulas Visit Vassar Elementary
By April Embree
Vassar Elementary Second Grade Teacher

Second graders at Vassar Elementary recently hosted Megan Lanning from the Butterfly Pavilion in their classroom. Lanning brought the life cycle of a butterfly to life for these eager young scientists through the use of literature, real life specimens and theater.
The students’ faces lit up as they watched their fellow classmates transform from a caterpillar egg, to a caterpillar, to a chrysalis and finally a butterfly. Students also got the chance crawl through a tub (symbolizing the chrysalis stage of the life cycle) and emerge as butterflies. As an added bonus, Vassar second graders got an upclose view of a tarantula! It was a day of learning and exploration that students are sure not to forget.
