National Middle Schools AssociationThe use of technology in APS classrooms recently received national attention! Representatives from the National Middle School Association visited Aurora Public Schools to learn how teachers incorporate cutting-edge technology into their classrooms. The NMSA chose APS as the only district in the state to spotlight because of its innovative method of blending technology with instruction. They plan to showcase what they learned at their national conference in the fall.

NMSA representatives visited a North Middle School literacy classroom, where each student works on a laptop in class and teachers Cari Roberts and Jennifer Henderson use blogs to encourage collaborative communication among the students and the teachers.

“I have found that through blogging, my students are much more comfortable writing and sharing their ideas. They also welcome edits and revisions and constructive criticism when other students comment on their blog posts online. It has become a very collaborative learning experience for all of us.”
- Cari Roberts
North Middle School Literacy Teacher

They also visited a classroom at Murphy Creek K-8– where Colleen Grant’s students use Palm handheld computers to perform all of their word processing– and Aurora Hills Middle School– where literacy teacher Judy Dake captures students’ learning in real-time using a program called Snapshot to help her monitor and then adjust small-group instruction.
