APS Gets Ready for Summer Savings
Summer is coming, but the heat isn’t on-and neither is the air conditioning. APS is ready with an energy plan that could save the district more than $100,000 over the summer break.
As part of the district’s new energy conservation program, every school will receive a checklist to help staff maximize savings as they shut down buildings for the summer. Turning off lights, office equipment and individual room thermostats are some of the steps that can add up to big savings.
The savings effort includes shutting down heating and air conditioning systems in all unoccupied buildings. HVAC systems will be programmed to accommodate fifth block and summer school. Also if school staff needs service for building rentals, events or meetings, they can request it in advance by completing a Maximo work order.
The conservation program-known as APS for Energy Conservation (ACE)-is aimed at creating a culture of energy and environmental consciousness and responsibility. APS Energy Consultant Tim ‘Bo’ Bacon and the ACE team have visited several schools this year to share their environmental message with students and staff and launch energy conservation and recycling programs.
Next year, ACE will introduce an energy incentive competition to involve every school in the district. Prizes will be awarded to schools that demonstrate the greatest improvement in electricity usage.
