APS Students Serve the Community
The Aurora Center for Active Adults recently honored members of the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps CO-861st Squadron for their commitment to the community. Colonel George Wade, USAF (Retired) and SMSgt Chuck Rivera, USAF (Ret) led this group in earning the Outstanding Service award presented by the Aurora Senior Community.
The AFJROTC CO-861 has a long history of supporting senior programs. One major city event is the Aurora Veterans Salute. The squadron has provided support for this event for the past 14 years. They have posted the Colors, greeted and seated guests and supported set up and clean up efforts.
In addition to supporting the Veterans Salute, the CO-861st Squadron also:
- volunteered at the Aurora Center for Active Adults Santa Shop as personal shoppers and gift wrappers.
- sold concessions at the Harvest of Crafts Bazaar.
- decorated the Aurora Center for Active Adults for the holidays
- served meals at the St. Patrick’s Luncheon.
- volunteered at the 9News Health Fair, Heather Gardens Salute to the Veterans, Arapahoe County Salute to the Volunteers, City of Aurora’s General’s Park rededication and the Arapahoe County Senior Health Benefits Fair.
“They accept all these assignments with an attitude of respect and commitment to serve. They can be counted on to get the job done and make everyone feel appreciated and honored.”
