APS Libraries Increase Circulation

APS Libraries Increase CirculationEarlier this year, Aurora Public Schools Library Services issued a challenge to all schools to increase their March library circulation by 10% during the month of April. Library staff stepped up to the challenge. Every school achieved their goal. Circulation increased a 53% district wide.

School staff used different and creative ways to get students excited about visiting the library. At the elementary level schools rethought their policies. Preschool and kindergartners were allowed to check out books and first graders were allowed two books instead of one. Students who were responsible users all year were rewarded with extra checkouts.

At the middle school level, several schools allowed students to check out magazines. They held amnesty days for students to return books with no penalty, and several schools waived student late fees altogether so students could begin to use the library again.

High schools students also increased their use of technology in the school libraries, such as online databases, audio books, eBooks, and equipment checkout.

April Govednik is an intern with the communication department. A 2006 Gateway High School graduate, April is majoring in communications at Chatham University in Pennsylvania.
