Taking the Plunge
Rangeview High School students helped younger students learn how to swim this past year.
Autistic kids from Vassar Elementary School were matched up with student volunteers at Rangeview. The kids learned about swimming safety rules and different swimming strokes.
One week, the Rangeview students showed their dedication by coming in on their day off to teach swim lessons to their Vassar kids. That lesson included canoe rides in the pool!
Organizers say the autistic kids have shown improvement in behavior skills, gross motor skills and academics through experiences like those at the Rangeview pool. The Rangeview students even put together lesson plans for the classes. One of the Rangeview students said this is the “best thing she did all school year.”
