Despite the appeal of a cool swimming pool on a hot summer day, hundreds of APS students chose to spend part of their summer break learning. Summer school continues the love of learning for these students during the months of June and July.
Mercedes Narvaez, 18, graduated from Aurora Central High School this year. Since August 2007, Mercedes has been taking cosmetology classes at Pickens Technical College. In that time, her instructor says Mercedes has transformed her clients and herself.
“She was unsure of herself at the beginning. Now she is not afraid to tackle anything,” said Pickens Cosmetology Senior Instructor Beverly Montoya.
Creating a new hairstyle for clients is one of Mercedes’ favorite parts of cosmetology school. She also enjoys applying makeup for her clients.
The salon at Pickens Tech offers a number of services including haircuts, highlights, facials, waxing and nail services. This fall, the salon will add massage chairs for clients to enjoy while receiving a pedicure.
All services are performed by students under the supervision of licensed instructors.
