NEWS RELEASE # 2
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2008 CSAP RESULTS SHOW OVERALL GAINS IN APS

Aurora Public Schools posted overall gains in CSAP results released today by the Colorado Department of Education, with the largest number of significant year-to-year gains by grade and subject in the past six years.

At today’s press conference hosted by the CDE, APS was verbally recognized by Governor Bill Ritter, Lieutenant Governor Barbara O’Brien and Commissioner of Education Dwight Jones for the growth seen in the 2008 CSAP results. All three said they were pleased with the gains demonstrated by APS.

Last year, nine APS schools had an overall increase near or at 3%. This year, the number more than doubled to 21 schools. The 3% rate is an APS goal set by the district. The number is acknowledged by the CDE as an “extremely compelling goal” and one that is difficult to attain.

APS highlights include:

  • APS posted overall gains for the 2008 CSAP test
  • 21 APS schools had an overall increase near or at 3%
  • APS recorded the largest number of significant year-to-year gains by grade and subject since 2002
  • APS gains outpaced the state results in all four academic areas (reading, writing, math and science)
  • During the testing period, 62% of APS students at the grade levels where CSAP testing takes place were enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program

The purpose of CSAP is to measure student proficiency on the Colorado Model Content Standards. The test is administered to students in grades three through 10 in the content areas of reading, writing and mathematics. Students in grades 5, 8 and 10 are tested in science. Initiated in 1997 with two tests, the CSAP has grown to include 31 tests.
